Fiji, a Melanesian country, is located in the South Pacific Sea. Fiji is composed of 332 islands, 110 of which are occupied. Fiji’s islands were created by steamy volcanic mountains and the surrounding tropical waters. The coral reefs off of Fiji’s coast are splendid.

Viti Levu is Fiji’s main and largest island. The highest mountain in the country is located here, Tomanivi. Situated on the far-flung east coast of Viti Levu, Tomanivi is the island’s little secret. You will find small villages and mangroves surrounding the mountain making it a perfect out of the way place to visit.

Taveuni is another of Fiji’s large islands. This island is one of only three places in the world where the 180 meridian passes over land. Lush, Taveuni is the native home of the Tagimoucia plant, an exotic flower. Turtle Island, another verdant paradise, is one of Fiji’s better known islands as a result of the many Hollywood stars who honeymoon there.

Fiji is largely composed of sultry rain forests, coconut plantations, beaches, and hills. The interior of most islands is a sparsely populated wilderness. Many dishes are cooked in a lovo- a pit oven. Partake of the island drink yagona with care. Also known as kava, this drink made from the root of the pepper plant will numb your tongue and lips. It may relax your muscles and is mildly intoxicating.

The people of Fiji are very conservative. There strong Christian morals date from 19th century missionaries who set up churches and missions on the island. While in Fiji you should dress modestly. Shoulders should be covered and skirts and shorts should fall at or below the knee. Beach wear should stay at the beach and not be worn in cafes or in town. It is also considered rude to touch a Fijian on the head. In Fiji the head is considered sacred.

No matter which island you plan to visit you will fly into the Nadi airport. All major carriers and local carriers, like Air Pacific, fly into Nadi. Many people choose to use Nadi as a base while they explore different islands. Most hotels in Nadi offer transfers to and from the airport. You can also enter the country by boat from Australia. Whichever way you arrive and whatever island you choose to holiday on you will have a memorable vacation in Fiji.
